Decorating Cents

I was going back and forth on whether I wanted a mobile for the nursery.  Sure they're cute and all but I don't remember my daughter being over excited for hers when she was a baby.  I was doing a Pinterest search for nurseries and came across several DIY versions.   There is this one with just circles that is cute.   source I also happened to come across this one.  It was the same concept but used elephants instead.  I love it and it totally goes with the bedding. source I knew I could make my own version. (p lease excuse the night time photography) I headed to Michael's to get some scrapbook paper and an embroidery hoop. I've been thinking about the storage elements for the nurser y.  Although there aren't a ny toys yet, I know they will be soon coming.   We're gonna need a place to corral all of them.  In my daughter's room we w ent with the Trofast from Ikea.   The white color was perfect to match her other furniture and we were able to choose from an assortme nt of colors in the interchangeable bins . source I love the idea of turning an Ikea Expedit into a storage and upholstering it for seating.  I'm thinking a window seat yes?  We could use colorful bins to go with the room decor and hide all the little toys that may end up scattered around the room.   source We've seen some wooden crates in Home Depot that would be great as well.  It wood be fun to paint them orange and line them up along a wall.  As the baby grows older, he can just toss the toys in easily and quickly since there's no lid. source How about putting that bad boy o

I came to a decision on the light for the nursery.  I jumped in the car and made a quick trip to Ikea.  I decided on the Alang in the larger 18" size. It has that modern shape I was looking for without spending a ton of money.  Here it is right out of the box.  It has a woven texture which I thought was plastic in the store but it's actually cloth.  The light comes with the diffuser so that's an added bonus.  I also got some orange ribbon from Michael's to jazz it up a bit. I first measured two pieces of ribbon to go around the top and bottom edge of the drum.  I melted the edges to keep them from fraying.   Using my hot glue gun, I made a dot about every six inches to attach my ribbon to the outside seams.  This way if I wasn't completely satisfied, I could rip off the ribbon and try something else.  I thought about adding a third row of ribbon in the middle but didn't want to cover up the textured surface. Back in November we had overhead lighting installed in the nursery.  We used a temporary light until the right light came along. This what the light was looking like. Pretty boring right?  I know I want some sort of drum light in there so I started looking around.  My first stop was Shades of Light.  I had read good things about them around blogland.  I entered orange in my search and this came up. source It's the same one from my mood board .  I love the orange but we know I am not paying $159 for a light.  This one also caught my eye. source Something about the pattern stuck out to me.  Again, at $149 not really an option.  I did notice it comes in just the drum shade by itself for $69 which is more reasonable.  I figure it wouldn't be too hard to make my own.  I made the drum pendant in the breakfast room with a pendant kit and shade.  I would just have to cover it with some funky fabric. I've also seen a few options in Ikea that I liked. T

So I told you Monday we had not done the class valentine cards yet.  Well I can check them off my list now.  As always, I was checking the Target dollar spot and came across these glow sticks.  There were 15 sticks in each pack.  Sweet deal!  I grabbed two.  I love the idea of the kid making her own cards instead of store bought.  They're just a little more personal.  Plus, she gets to use her crafting skills.  I was also trying to get away from giving candy.  We always end up with so much of it so I was thinking maybe the other parents would appreciate the gester.   I made these cards in Picmonkey and printed them on card stock.   We punched holes and inserted the glow sticks.   Super simple and easy on the pocket.  Nothing like saying you made it yourself.  

I don't do the decorate for Valentine's Day thing, but wanted to do something to keep the kid occupied for a minute.  She keeps mentioning the class Valentine's party this week, which I haven't bought cards or snacks for yet.  I figured a Valentine craft would be perfect to get her geared up for the upcoming week.    A few weeks ago, we bought a pack of valentine scrapbook paper in Target's dollar section.  One dollar for ten sheets ain't bad if you ask me.     Since I wanted all my hearts the same size, I cut out a heart from a folder I had laying around.  Using it as a template, I folded and cut out all my hearts. I used a hole punch to put holes in the corners, strung them on a ribbon, and hung it on her door.  I like how the pink goes with her decor so who knows how long it will stay there.   We've got eight sheets left to make something else.  Perhaps Valentine cards for the class.  I better get moving.  Only a few days left.

In the original plan for the nursery, I have the Poang from Ikea.  We bought it before as a family room option but I didn't care for it because it looked too much like a nursery chair.  I like the clean lines of the chair but not sure how comfy it's gonna be sitting for long periods of time.  Also, the arms aren't padded.  I wanted to check around for more options before I settled on the Poang.  source I like the look of the cradle rockers but I don't think hubby is feeling the retro vibe of it.   To me, they're cute and simple. source We had a version of this in my daughter's nursery.  It was a gift so we just went with it.  It doesn't exactly have the modern lines we are going for this time, so I'll try to stay clear. source This glider is definitely a nice one.  It looks so comfy.  It's very modern and made of microsuede so it would be good for spills.  At $349 it's a little out of my budget.   source I th
