Painting A Striped Wall
Now that the nursery walls are painted, I wanted to add a little something to them. I've always wanted to do a striped wall and here's my chance. I was noticing in my pinned nurseries, this one and this one had striped walls. I thought about stripes all over but decided to go with a striped accent wall instead.
Here's the room with just the gray paint, Behr Silver Sateen. Entrance into the nursery.
Closet wall
This is the wall where the crib will go. I wanted to make this the accent wall.
I chose to go with a simple white stripe to keep the room neutral since I will be adding bright colors later. The color I chose is Behr Snow Fall. I started by measuring my stripes. The wall is eight feet tall making it 96 inches but I wanted the stripes to be the same width the whole way down. Taking away the baseboard, that left me with 93 inches of wall to work on. I decided I wanted seven stripes, three white and four gray ones. That made my stripes 13.28 inches wide each.
Starting at the ceiling, I marked 13.28 inches down and made a mark. I did this about every 12 inches all the way across the wall for my first stripe. I repeated this step all the way down the wall until all stripes were marked off. Using a yard stick and level, I connected my marks across. After the lines were drawn, I taped them.
Remember to tape the side of the stripes where the new color meets the adjoining wall. You want a clean line there too. I used a credit card to smooth out the bubbles in the tape .
Now for painting those stripes! I wanted a clean, crisp line when I removed the tape. I have seen several methods for doing this. The first one involved painting the edge of the tape with the base color to seal the edge. Once dry, paint with your stripe color. This is supposed to keep the stripe color from bleeding underneath the tape. Seems like a good way but I didn't want to pull out the first color. The second method was the dry brush method. It involves taking a nearly dry brush with very little paint on it to lightly coat the edges of your tape with the stripe color. Sounded easy enough so this is the way I chose.
After the edging was dry, I filled in with a six inch roller. The gray still showed a little through the white, so I applied two coats. While the second coat was still wet, I took off the tape. Let's say I was holding my breath to see some seepage but I was pretty amazed that my lines were perfect. No bleeding!
I'm in love with the stripes. I couldn't be happier with how they turned out. I must admit though, it was challenging. The measuring part was a little tricky because our walls and ceiling don't seem to be perfectly straight. I'm kind of glad I chose to only do one wall. I would have been nutty by the end of it.
So have you painted stripes? Did you find it hard? What were some tricks you used?

I LOVE this shade of grey. I've been thinking of doing a wall like this in my sons room with a smaller accent stripe in red along with the larger stripes. Your tutorial is great!!
ReplyDeleteThis turned out great! I love an accent wall on behind the crib. Can't wait to see the finished nursery :)
ReplyDeleteLooks fabulous!! :*)

Love this! Just moved and wanted to paint my son's nursery a little lighter gray than we had in the old house, and the color you chose is perfect. I like it so much I'm adding the same stripes! Thanks for the step by step instructions. Looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I am comtemplating painting stipes on the walls of a little sitting area between my dining room and living room. Both walls have windows though so I don't know if horizontal stripes would look good. I will definitely be trying your method when I am ready to paint. Thanks for sharing, Patti
ReplyDeleteI love it. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this. I am pinning it so I can refer to it later. :D

Thanks for linking up to It's Party Time - great tutorial - I plan on doing this in my son's room and my office too! You did a great job!! I would really appreciate it if you could add my party url to your party list! http://www.thecraftyscientist.com/2013/01/moms-quatrefoil-bulletin-board.html
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!!
Hi Andrea, The stripes turned out wonderful! I am anxious to see the finished nursery. Thanks for sharing the tutorial at the Open House party.

This looks excellent! Love both colors. I have painted stripes more than once, and it does make a person crazy! For my last stripes project, I did random widths so that took away some of the measuring. :)
ReplyDeleteThat looks great! Can you come paint mine? :)
ReplyDeleteWell done! It's funny, you don't expect something like painting stripes to be as detailed as it actually is, do you? I painted stripes in my son's nursery (eons ago), and it was definitely a painstaking process, but so worth it! Your nursery is going to be darling - I can tell already! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing it at my January linky party!
Do you mind sharing what color you used for the gray? It's a perfect gray and I love the stripes.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! It turned out beautifully. -Brenda-
ReplyDeleteP.S: Years ago I did a colour-blocked wall for my Grandson's Nursery and found a lazer level was the way to go for alignment. It had a total of six different colours and consisted of thirty blocks. Though it was time consuming, it was quite easy to do. Just took a little patience. ☺
Love it! We have nearly identical stripes in our playroom :)
ReplyDeleteThey look great! My son's room has a stripe wall-- light blue walls with different width navy blue, white and lime green stripes. (Here's a link with some not-so-pretty pictures, but you get the idea: http://babyschwartz2011.blogspot.com/2011/05/nursery.html)
ReplyDeleteThey were quite time consuming to paint, but I love how they turned out. If you look reeeeeally close, you can see that they're not perfect but that's because my walls are old and have gotten an orange peel sort of texture from many layers of paint.
Looks great! Funny that we did the same project but you painted white on gray and I painted gray on white!
ReplyDeleteI haven't thought of stripe so good-looking until today, the wall of the great.
ReplyDeleteA striped wall looks really great, but doing it can really test the patience of the person who will try to do it. Hahaha! In any way, I love how you made the process seem easy to do. It is challenging, yet enjoyable, and I'm sure the satisfaction you'll get when you're done will be priceless. In any way, thanks for sharing such precise instructions, Andrea! Kudos and all the best to you! :)

good job. thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
ReplyDeletegood info thanks
ReplyDeleteLove the color! What is the brand and color name, please and thank you!
ReplyDeleteTrying to budget my time around my work schedule, how long did it take to complete the striped wall? Hours? Days? I’m thinking a whole day, but I need time to paint the other walls and the striped wall. 3 days at the most? Does that sound reasonable?
