Two-Toned Kitchens

A few years a ago we painted the kitchen cabinets.  We took the cabinets from a light maple color to a dark espresso.  The dark cabinets totally changed the feel of our kitchen.  I love dark cabinets and to me they are so modern.  Not to say white kitchens can't be modern but the dark has always appealed to me.


If you're like me, you love a variety of kitchens: white, dark, gray, and in between.  Every time I see a kitchen with a different color palette than ours, I'm a little intrigued.  I often wonder how different our kitchen would feel with a lighter cabinet again.  The combo I have been loving recently is the two-toned kitchen.

 These are some that I could do with a slight color change to the island.  I would love to change up the kitchen but don't want to go through the hassle of re-painting ALL the cabinets.

Then there's the gray and white combo.  I love them!  I think it's the fresh white mixed with the calm gray that does it for me.  It would take a complete do-over to make my kitchen look like these.  If I even mention it, my husband gives me that look like, "Don't even think about it."  We both can remember living with a torn apart kitchen for a week.  Not fun.
 

  
Then there are the kitchens that have used non-traditional colors but turn out so beautiful.






Gorgeous right?  Which is your favorite combo or are you more of a one color all over person?

    The two toned idea I am loving is the dark counter top with the contrasting light island counter top.

    Hey there, beautiful kitchen! If you had to choose a white paint colour that matched your cabinets what would you suggest? I am painting my cabinets and trying to find the right white. Thank you !

Wall Mounted TV and Hiding The Cords

We mounted the loft TV on the wall last week.  We knew we didn't want those ugly cords connected to the TV to be seen.  I had done a few searches to see what our options were for hiding them.  Turns out, there are several.  My least favorite was the cord cover and I knew that wasn't going to work for me. Here are the pieces we bought from Home Depot.  They are wall plates that allow you to pull the cords through but keep them hidden in the wall. After we figured out where we wanted the holes, using the template in the package, we cut a hole right under the TV mount for the cords coming from the TV.  It made me a little nervous cutting a hole in the wall.  The cords also needed a place to exit at the bottom.  We cut the second hole straight down from the top one, right next to the outlet where the cords would be plugged in. To make it easier to get the dropped cords, we installed the top plate first.  It just goes into the hole and the screws tighten it against

Gray Bathroom Cabinets

From the start, I wanted all the bathroom cabinets to be dark like the master bathroom .  I began my usual search online for more ideas. As I was searching, I came across bathrooms with gray cabinets.  I must say, I love the look. I have seen plenty of gray kitchens but never thought to have the bathroom cabinets gray as well. source   source source   I'm a little torn now.  I like the gray cabinets but with all things, my tastes change, so not sure if I would still like them in a couple years.  If I go this route, it would totally throw a curve into the plan since the walls are already painted.  Gray walls and cabinets would be overload. What do you think about gray cabinets?  Are your cabinets a color you don't see often?

Installing Ikea Lack Shelves

I have wanted built-ins somewhere in my home for forever. They look so classic and they are extra spot to house beautiful home decor pieces. I have seen many a hack for turning the Ikea Billy bookcase into built-ins but I kept debating whether I was up for the challenge. Were built-ins too much for me? In my head I wanted something simpler too.  In my searches for DIY built-ins I kept coming across floating shelves. I love the modernness of them. The clean lines. The way they just seem to be coming out of the wall. There were times where I would browse Homegoods and Target seeing all the pretty things I could put on shelves. Alright done. Floating shelves it was. Once I decided on floating shelves, the debate was whether I wanted to build them or just buy them. Building them meant I could make them the exact size I wanted them to be.
