Another One Down

This weekend I finished another pinned project from my Pinterest boards.  I took the challenge after Sherry and Katie announced the Pinterest Challenge Fall Edition last week.

I had already planned to finish this light but the challenge made me kick it into high gear so I could finish in time for the link up this week.  The light is in the formal dining room and is the builder's grade left up by the previous homeowners.  It was white and not exactly our style.  I knew it would be changed.  This is how it has been for the last 6 months.  Notice there are no bulbs.  I hated it so much I wasn't willing to show it any love.  Just shook my head every time I walked by.

Here it is with bulbs.  A little better but I still wasn't feelin' the white.  Besides the white color, it has a textured surface.  Yuck.  Whose idea was it to put texture on a light fixture?

So I decided to change it since the light I really want there won't be making an appearance for a while.

Here she is after a few coats of black spray paint.

Up close you can really see the texture.

I ended up spray painting the chandelier indoors.  Yes, you read that right.  INDOORS.  Someone please remind me not to do that again.  I didn't want the hassle of taking it down and putting it back up.  The spray painting itself wasn't hard.  I just had to lay down sheets over the table and chairs.  The horrible part was finding that the black dust fumes had settled on every single square inch of the downstairs floors.  So I had to mop them afterwards.  That's what I get for trying to take the easy route I guess.  Since I didn't take the light down, I had to no way of painting the chain without also painting the ground wire that runs through the chain.  I knew a painted wire could lead to a fire.  I just made my own cord cover.  I had some black fabric that I cut in a four inch wide strip and hot-glued it down the sides while wrapping it around the cord.  The fabric was longer than the cord itself so I had some room to bunch it.

I think it's a big improvement.  Now that the light is bandaged, maybe I'll get around to actually painting the dining room.  Still trying to decide on a color...and maybe a wall treatment.

  14. A white chandelier?? Who does that? The revamp makes it look MUCH better! I bought a similar chrome chandelier on clearance with the intention of refinishing it and adding some little shades. I just love those little shades. And now the plan also includes a cord cover. Thanks for the great idea!

  18. It looks great. As I'm reading your post I'm eying my very own dining room chandelier thinking that I don't want to take that sucker down and I wonder if I can spray paint it in place ... and then read your tale of doing exactly that. Hmmmm. Gave me pause to consider ...
