Sweet Girl's Room

So I thought I would share with you what my daughter's room looks like right now.  It has the plain, boring, builder grade beige walls and no character.  Right now all the furniture is laid out around the outside of the room to give her room to play in the center.  I've been trying to re-arrange furniture in my head to see if this is the best possible layout for her.


Her bedding is from our previous house and will have to be changed out.  Not sure if I want to keep the shelving unit that attaches to the bed and do a separate shelf for her books and stuffed animals.  I thought about changing her bed so that the headboard is against the wall.  But with doing that she will lose floor space in the center.  I'll be adding some sort of art above the bed.  Maybe her name.

 

Her one light source is the lamp that I now hate.  It does light the room pretty well but I'm not feeling the look anymore.  It got pretty beat up during the move.  The previous owners didn't have overhead light installed in the secondary bedrooms so I'll have to get creative.  It's not in the budget right now to have lights professionally added.  You can see the doors to her attached bathroom and closet.
 

Yes, her tv is on the floor!  We got rid of her old tv stand before we moved in this house and I haven't found anything to match yet.  I like the idea of her having an art center so I'll probably keep the table and add some chairs and art supplies.  The window is big and bare so it's a must for some curtains or maybe even a cornice board.  The dresser, like the rest of her furniture, is white (and will be staying that way, I think).  Trying to figure out a way to add something above it so that corner isn't so plain. 


This is the wall that's going to give me the most trouble.  It's super long and I need lots of art.  It also has her storage bins and play kitchen.  Would like to move the kitchen to a corner but stumped about which corner.  I want her to have easy access to it since she does actually play with it.


Here's another view of the room but from the window.  Can you see the lean of the lamp?  It must go immediately!!


I want to give my daughter a room she'll enjoy now and can grow into over the next few years.  So I want things that are cute and girly but not baby-ish since she'll have to live with this until she's 18.  Not really.  Maybe.

    On the long wall you could make a place to hang art...use chalk board paint on the walls or find an old frame at a thrift store and use that to put some cork board in.. which you can buy at joanns or a craft store...love the green and pink!! Those are the same colors of my daughters room!

Wall Mounted TV and Hiding The Cords

We mounted the loft TV on the wall last week.  We knew we didn't want those ugly cords connected to the TV to be seen.  I had done a few searches to see what our options were for hiding them.  Turns out, there are several.  My least favorite was the cord cover and I knew that wasn't going to work for me. Here are the pieces we bought from Home Depot.  They are wall plates that allow you to pull the cords through but keep them hidden in the wall. After we figured out where we wanted the holes, using the template in the package, we cut a hole right under the TV mount for the cords coming from the TV.  It made me a little nervous cutting a hole in the wall.  The cords also needed a place to exit at the bottom.  We cut the second hole straight down from the top one, right next to the outlet where the cords would be plugged in. Sunburst In The Dining Room

I've been looking for a round mirror for the stenciled wall in the dining room but have had no such luck.  We tried a larger piece of art on that wall but the colors and patterns didn't mesh well with the stencil already there.  I needed something dark and pretty solid to stand out against the stencil.  I decided a sunburst mirror would fit this space nicely.  I made one for my daughter's room with skewers but knew that one would be too small for this spot.  I wanted it to be thick and dark.  After seeing several versions, I decided to use paint sticks.  They are free and thick enough to make an impact on the wall.  I had some extra in the garage at home since we had started painting other rooms in the house already.  I would always grab a couple extra on each paint trip to Home Depot.  I also bought a 12 inch round beveled mirror from Hobby Lobby.  It was half off candles sale so it came to $4.00.  I had the rest of the supplies at home. Installing Ikea Lack Shelves

I have wanted built-ins somewhere in my home for forever. They look so classic and they are extra spot to house beautiful home decor pieces. I have seen many a hack for turning the Ikea Billy bookcase into built-ins but I kept debating whether I was up for the challenge. Were built-ins too much for me? In my head I wanted something simpler too.  In my searches for DIY built-ins I kept coming across floating shelves. I love the modernness of them. The clean lines. The way they just seem to be coming out of the wall. There were times where I would browse Homegoods and Target seeing all the pretty things I could put on shelves. Alright done. Floating shelves it was. Once I decided on floating shelves, the debate was whether I wanted to build them or just buy them. Building them meant I could make them the exact size I wanted them to be.
