House Tour: Kitchen

The kitchen has been started.  It has gotten a coat of paint and we bought new stainless appliances when we moved in.  The hardwood floors were not extended into this space.  We weren't really sure how the hardwoods would hold up in the kitchen.  We have plenty of flooring left so finishing this space wouldn't be an issue.

There's lots of space in here where the whole family can be in there and not bump into each other.  I would say we have double the cabinet space as our previous home.  Although I love the amount of cabinets, I don't love the color of them.  We are eventually going to stain the cabinets darker.  This should keep the cabinets from blending in to the wall color, which I am thinking about changing also.  We are also going to install a tile backsplash.

The window brings in great light in the daytime.

Here's a before of the same space.

In this corner is my re-vamped knife block.  The knife block was a light color but me being me I spray painted it in oil rubbed bronze.  I will change the glass canisters to stainless or bronze.  I haven't seen any that I love yet.

In the other corner is a cheese dome.  It was 2 separate pieces that were glued together and spray painted oil rubbed bronze.  I borrowed this idea from Allison.  The tray is a thrift store find that I lined with scrapbook paper.

We can't understand why there are 3 light fixtures here.  There are 2 florescent lights and 1 recessed light.  We are planning to add some track lighting and a pendant over the island.

How about a before and after?

So do you have hardwood floors in your kitchen?  How are they holding up?

Kitchen To do list:
Stain cabinets
Install tile backsplash
Change light fixtures
Wall art
Accessories on top of the cabinets?
Beadboard on island

  1. I have hardwoods in my kitchen and I LOVE them...the house is new to us but it was built in 1964 and they're still goign strong! Vistiting from WUW. I posted on my kitchen today too, check it out if you'd like

  2. Lovely kitchen! I posted about mine very recently too after painting the cabinets -- come see if you have the time. Jenny

  3. Such a beautiful kitchen and I love your blog. I'm a new follower, here from Kim's party. Hope you stop over for a visit sometime.

  4. good to know hardwood in the kitchen do hold up, I have been wondering the same thing. I want to paint my cabinets they are a similar style as yours.

  5. We have hardwood in our kitchen and it is holding up well. Really like your kitchen especially all of those nice cabinets!!

  6. I might be your lone negative on the hardwood in the kitchen....I work in Real Estate and can tell you that after a number of years, there's almost always a problem with them. Someone spills a cup of liquid, the sink or dishwasher leaks....and the floors are ruined and it's really hard to repair. I'd suggest tile.

I LOVE your kitchen! The size is great, the island is a dream and I wish I had the amount of cupboards that you do!

I agree that painting/staining them is a good idea.

    Look forward to seeing more!

  7. Your kitchen has so much potential!Your plans sound great!

  13. All the space!!! That island will do wonders for you when you're entertaining. LUCKY girl. It's an awesome kitchen! Thanks for sharing.

  14. Your kitchen is so open and spacious very nice. I too know the value of a can of oil rubbed bronze spray paint - it's transformer. We just put hardwood in our kitchen, and I love the look. I'm not yet sure how I will like the maintenance part compared to my former easy care tile. And I am definitely shopping for a rug for the sink/dishwasher area.

  15. Your kitchen is very pretty. We do have hardwood floors and they've been holding up pretty well!

  16. Hi found your blog through monday mingle. I love your kitchen * jealous*. Natasha x

  17. Your kitchen is so pretty. Who knows why builders do things?
We recently had to replace our hardwood floors due to the fridge dripping all night long. Other then that I love my hardwood floors. I posted a kitchen tour yesterday - come see!

  18. Your kitchen is fabulous! I love the island and great appliances! I have Italian black tiles on ours and I have a terrific idea for your light fixtures...if you have time I did a post, not long ago, in July, about our rebuilt kitchen, it's worth looking at it yourself, it's very practical! I'm your newest follower! Hugs, FABBY

  25. Our home is six years old and the hardwood floors in the kitchen look just as good as the rest of the wood floors in our house. You have a great kitchen with lots of cabinets and counter space. Thanks for linking to the Open House party.

  26. Fabulous kitchen- great space, can't wait to see the transformation with the cabinets stained. I have wood floors in my kitchen (20 years old), and they are still beautiful!!! In fact, I always get compliments on my floor and guests always ask me what I clean it with, (water & a bit of white vinegar).
P.S.- It has been through lots of kids, dogs, parties and every spill imaginable.

  27. Looks like you have made some nice changes to your kitchen! I think hardwoods are a great choice for a kitchen.

  28. What a great space! I love how you've warmed it up so far and look forward to seeing your plans and transformation! Thanks so much for sharing in the Roomspiration party! ;)

  29. I love the look of hardwoods in the kitchen, but in our new (to us) house we have tile, and I have to say, I really love it. Mainly for the dirt hiding factor. That's big for me with three kids and a dog. :-). Your kitchen is coming together nicely, and I look forward to seeing the changes you make next! Thanks for linking up to my Room Evolution party"
