West Elm Inspired Side Table
I like to look at the West Elm website and catalogs and drool over the nice tables and accessories. I like pretty things but don't think I should pay a fortune for them. I do have things from West Elm but they were on sale and I never pay full price.
You may remember this red side table from the living room.
I've always like the shape of it but the love affair I had with it was fading. I was falling out of love with the red. While browsing the West Elm catalog, I came across these nesting tables. It was very similar in shape and size to my red side table. I knew with a little paint, I could come close to the West Elm version.
I started by unscrewing the wood top from the metal frame. I gave the frame a few coats of black spray paint to cover up the red.
Now it was time to move on to the top. I decided I didn't want an all white top. In the West Elm table, the table looks streaked. To create the look of texture, I decided to go with white washing.
To white wash, mix equal parts of a water and white paint. I used a rag to apply thin coats of my paint mixture. After each coat was dry, I applied another until I got the coverage I wanted.
And the result!
I made sure to go with the grain of the wood in the table top. Some of the original darkness still shows through.
I like the finished product. The table doesn't scream at you like the red did. It's much more subtle.
My version versus the West Elm version.
Not bad right? I little paint can go a long way.
